NEW ALBUM: Spirits Eat Music

Nov. 11th, 2022

Earlier this summer, as they began rolling out music from their second full-length album, SunDub kicked things off by showcasing three diverse singles showing multiple facets of their musical approach on Spirits Eat Music. Starting with “Jump And Dance,” featuring Lutan Fyah, the Brooklyn-based five-piece delivered an irresistible feel good tune perfect for the warm summer months. Switching it up, next came the title track “Spirits Eat Music,” a catchy tune with a heavier theme that speaks to a personal message of love and loss for the band. The latest single “New Ways To Love,” featuring GRAMMY-winning vocalist Peetah Morgan (of Morgan Heritage), inspires an optimistic outlook towards life through its uplifting lyrics. The official video for the song was just released, further showcasing the playful and positive nature of the track. The video was filmed on location in Florida and was directed, shot, and edited by David Svedosh.

NEW SINGLE: New Ways To Love feat. Peetah Morgan

oct. 14th, 2022

For the third single off of their upcoming album, Spirits Eat Music, Brooklyn-based SunDub brought in another Brooklyn-bred reggae icon, Peetah Morgan of GRAMMY-winning group Morgan Heritage, to join in the fun. Morgan and SunDub lead vocalist Joanna Teters riff off each other on the uplifting tune, which instructs listeners on how to move forward out of challenges.

The song’s lyrics were originally written during the first weeks of COVID lockdowns in New York City in 2020. Joanna explains that “as the whole world was presented with a new reality of isolation and separation from their usual, everyday lives and routines, came this song about finding ways to feel grateful and centered, even when you are feeling constricted or challenged.” This fits in with much of Spirits Eat Music, as the album takes an honest look at the band member’s lives over the last few years, containing themes of profound loss, transformation, connection and love. Besides Peetah Morgan’s guest vocal, the track also features a horn section of Greg LaPine (Mephiskapheles) on sax and Buford O’Sullivan (Easy Star All-Stars) on trombone, along with percussionist Larry McDonald (The Skatalites, Gil Scott Heron).

Spirits Eat Music

Sept. 23rd, 2022

In early 2021, Joanna and Ben Teters, the brother and sister who front SunDub, were shaken to their core by the death of their younger brother, Adam. He was only 20 and was a budding musician and producer, just like most everyone in the family; he had already been working on projects with his older siblings. As you would expect with two musicians, Ben and Joanna used their artistry as a tool to help make sense of their new reality. The most direct result is the powerful title track from their upcoming sophomore album, Spirits Eat Music, which is being released as a single September 23, via Easy Star Records. (The full album comes out November 11, 2022.) Though the song and its lyrics were written prior to Adam’s passing, both took on powerful new meaning in the wake of that tragic event.

Jump and Dance feat. Lutan Fyah

Aug. 26, 2022

With the help of Jamaican vocalist Lutan Fyah, “Jump and Dance” will keep you smiling and moving with its danceable grooves and good vibes. The single is a strong introduction to SunDub’s lush sound and the next phase they are laying out with their new album. Ben expresses, “As long time fans of Lutan’s music, it is an honor to feature him in ‘Jump & Dance’ and to welcome him into the SunDub family. His vocal style is a perfect complement to Joanna – it really brought this track to the next level.”

Don’t Let Go (Love)

Oct 19, 2021

SunDub’s next victim in their series of reggae-flipped R&B hits is none other than the massive 90’s power ballad “Don’t Let Go (Love)” by En Vogue. This anthemic and explosive track aims straight at the hearts of 80’s babies and reggae fans alike, once again highlighting SunDub’s high-level musicianship and production chops. The searing guitar riffs and relentless rhythm section center around the lead vocal that carries each section forward with new purpose and passion. Teters’ interpretation of En Vogue’s lyrics is sure to bring the timeless “unrequited love” story to a new audience while thrilling unexpecting fans of the original.

Ain’t Nobody

DEC 15, 2020

On the heels of their summertime dub EP release, Brooklyn-based band SunDub now brings you “Ain’t Nobody,” the celebrated funk/soul classic, first released in 1983 by Rufus and Chaka Khan. SunDub, fronted by lead singer Joanna Teters, redresses this classic, giving it a perfectly fitting reggae makeover you didn’t know it needed. Teters pays homage to the original with her own powerhouse vocals, while the band serves up a heavy rocking, reverb-drenched groove, highlighting the song's iconic essence. The track, which features Sidney Mills, formally of Steel Pulse, on organ, as well production and mixing credits, represents an evolution in the SunDub sound and provides an exciting glimpse into the future. “Ain’t Nobody” was recorded at The Creamery Studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn before the sweeping COVID shutdowns that paralyzed New York City earlier this year. Burden of Love

June 13, 2019

SunDub’s debut album, “Burden of Love," features reggae royalty The Chronic Horns (Easy Star All-Stars), Larry McDonald (Lee Scratch Perry, Gil Scott-Heron) and is mixed and co-produced by Sidney Mills (Steel Pulse). They lend their talents to Joanna Teters' commanding and soulfully smoky lead vocals and blend seamlessly with the super tight arrangements of the SunDub rhythm section. The result is a stand out expression of reggae’s classic undulating pulse and lush subterranean grooves, reinvented for listeners of all times and genres.

SunDub Meets Victor Rice

August 21, 2020

“Close to Me Dub” is drenched in reverb and puts an airy, psychedelic vibe on SunDub’s most popular song. Concluding the ‘SunDub Meets Victor Rice’ EP, Rice reimagines the original vocal-heavy song in an exploratory dub to appeal to a different audience and expose younger fans to the art of dub remixing. Old school heads with Lee Scratch Perry and King Tubby records in their collection will vibe with the authenticity while younger listeners will get lost in the echoing hypnosis throughout the entire 3-song EP.
